Some of the most important skills individuals should have are related to health and safety. No matter what job you do, you need general health and safety skills, knowledge and understanding to ensure work is undertaken safely at all times.
Some
jobs and tasks require special health and safety skills. Tasks like isolations
and working in confined spaces are examples where specialist skills are required.
OHS Representatives also require specialized training to perform their role
and functions effectively. For more information about OHS Representatives
training go to the
OHS Representatives page of this website.
For effective management of health and safety in the workplace all employees need an understanding of what they can do to minimise the possibility of injuring themselves or others whilst at work.
The most effective method of doing this is to provide formal training to improve people's ability to manage health and safety for themselves and their workplace. Formal training in subjects like incident investigation, confined spaces, work noise and hazard management provides the skill base for people to expand with on-the-job activities and additional training.
The OHS&E Unit provides a variety of health and safety training. During 2001/2002 we trained more than 400 industry employees. Over 70 percent of these were elected Health and Safety Representatives from production crews. Training provided included hazard management, incident investigation, basic and advanced representatives training. To view an online version of our training brochure in pdf format, please click here.
