The industry expends a great deal of energy to manage and minimise any negative impacts that the manufacturing processes may have on the environment. A visit to any of the major paper producers websites will demonstrate their recognition of the importance of good environmental management.
A part of the OHS&E Unit’s role is to ensure that steps undertaken to manage the environment meet legislative obligations and achieve best practice where possible through the joint involvement of management employees and their unions at each work site.
To that end, in 1998 the Pulp and Paper Industry Environment Agreement was introduced. The purpose of the agreement being to clearly set out the agreed responsibilities of management, employees and their union to responsibly manage the environment. The agreement is in place with all the major organisations that fund the OHS&E Unit.
In 2003 the Pulp and Paper Industry combined the OHS and Environment agreements into one document. The purpose and intent of the Agreement remains, with responsible management of the environment a priority.
